Let there NOT be light... and save our world

PEOPLE will shine a light on environmental issues for Earth Hour 2013 on Saturday, March 23... with candles!

Youngsters from the Worcester Roots Foundation have organised activities to mark the occasion, when people across the world are encouraged to switch their lights off for one hour.

People will gather at King George V Community Centre from 6.30pm for an evening of fun underpinned by the serious environmental message.

WWF launched Earth Hour to focus people’s minds on the planet by turning off their lights for one hour at 8.30pm. Natasha Giaquinto, project manager for Worcester Roots, said: “Worcester Roots volunteers organised a small Earth Hour event last year and wanted to make this year’s event even bigger and invite the people of Worcester to share in their enthusiasm for this growing campaign. Even if people cannot come to see what we are doing on the night, people can show their support for Worcester Roots and WWF by switching off their lights for an hour.”

The main event will be the a giant display of the words Earth Hour 2013 spelled out in candles at 8.30pm.

There will also be a host of activities including a workshop with hand drum band DrumLove, classic children’s games such as hoopla and Jenga, an eco-bingo and music from local bands and performers.

Miss Giaquinto said: “I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped in the planning of this event. My young volunteers have done an amazing job and we hope people enjoy the evening’s activities.”

Worcester Roots Foundation is run by 16 to 25-year- olds who have a passion for environmental issues.

The event is free. However, donations for Worcester Roots Foundation are welcomed.
