THE next time you career over a horrific pothole in Worcestershire, what have you got, if not a lot (of bills to pay)?

One things for sure, Worcestershire County Council’s highways team are doing it “their way” - and if you’re a Frank Sinatra fan, look away now.

Inspired by the popularity of YouTube, County Hall’s road chiefs have put together an amusing, or perhaps embarrassing, mickey-taking video even ‘Ol Blue Eyes might have chuckled at.

The video features tuxedo-sporting highways boss Jon Fraser, singing his own version of ‘My Way’ showing how important it is to report potholes across Worcestershire.

It shows him walking down a road singing “complaints, we get a few”, before belting out “we’ll lay each tarmac course, not when it’s wet, but on a dry day,” with Sinatra’s main line changed to “at work in highways”.

The authority say the video was inspired by Torfaen Council in Wales, which used YouTube and a singing Elvis to spread the word about gritting and maintaining roads in the winter.

The county council’s effort took half a day to create and another day to edit, which cost around £800 and was funded by Ringway, Worcestershire’s highways contractor.

Mr Fraser, who won’t be compared to The Voice any time soon, said: “We're grateful to Torfaen Council for the inspiration, and we're really excited about the launch of Worcestershire Highways' own video, ‘At work in highways’, which we hope broadcasts a serious and important message about the value of reporting potholes in an enjoyable way.”

REACTION: 'The only answer they've got is a stupid video'

A DRIVER stung by a pothole in Worcestershire says he doesn’t find the video funny - and has questioned the timing of it.
Derek Jones, 54, of Norton, near Worcester, featured on the front page of your Worcester News last week after a hole caused £165 of damage to his car in nearby Church Lane.
Mr Jones, who had his claim for compensation rejected by County Hall, said: “I think it’s stupid and sums up their mentality.
“It’s terribly bad timing, it’s almost as though the only answer they’ve got is to make an embarrassing video with all those blokes in the background, it’s disgusting.”
The county council say they are repairing 200 potholes a day at the moment, and have filled in over 5,000 since January.
The authority says it has 800 miles of roads to maintain across Worcestershire and new potholes are appearing daily.

I appreciate the humour and it is important for the public to report problems and not just moan about them.

I can not understand why there isn't information of which potholes have been reported, the effect is many people will be reporting the same problem.

Therefore wasting both the taxpayers and the council staff's time.

How is it a good idea to waste our council tax on creating a back slapping self promotional video?

Why do they need to promote at all when they run a monopoly who is the competition?

How much did this cost and I mean full cost and I mean full cost man hours included?

Why are they wasting public funds on this while cutting public services?

This is just a blatant rip off of the one by Torfaen Council

Oh sorry we are too stupid to know to know or find out how to report pot holes we need to pay council workers to make self-indulgent videos with a ripped off idea, we can use computers so I am sure we can track down that information.

I am lost for words. The video is well constructed and humorous, but this really does sum up the mentality of the highways department. With their roads in such a poor condition, and with a track of incompetence, they decide to spend precious time and tax payer's money on a video rather than focus on delivering services which the public pays for and demands.

This just merely highlights their attitude and contempt towards the public, and in a week of stories about potholes and how they're damaging people's cars, this 'mickey-taking' video is in poor taste. If they wanted to try and ram home the message about reporting potholes, there were much better and efficient ways, while if council staff inspected roads more frequently and carried out better repairs, there would be no need to undertake such publicity.

Mr Fraser has yet again demonstrated how out of touch he is and, to be frank, what an idiot he is and it is high time that he, and all the other idiots in the highways department who sanctioned this video, were sacked. There is no place in councils for such people who are clearly overpaid and choose to come up with videos rather than do what we pay them to do.

Perhaps this is the most effective way to get the message across about reporting potholes or other defects on the highway.

How many people who keep moaning about potholes actually take the time and report them ?. Old fashioned public information films often missed their target audience. The welsh highways youtube film had a huge impact.
With regard to the cost,
Why don't you contact the County Council and ask who actually paid for this to be produced.

I should be shocked that yet more tax payer's money is being wasted by Worcestershire county council, but as it's the highways department, I'm less surprised. Is there really no end to the utter stupidity and lack of real world recognition from the the highways staff? What next I wonder? A luxury summer holiday in Bardados paid for by the tax payer, with the holiday photos on the internet saying "Wish you were here", just to rub further salt in to the public's wounds?

And Jon Fraser really does love the publicity. An officer who must be earning a massive salary, but rather than deliver highway services, he prefers being in front of the camera or behind a microphone. Talk about an ego trip. This man needs to be ousted from the council, as should so many other idiotic and incompetent highways staff.

e's a HUGE pothole in Ombersley I drive over every day! Humour is great. However, if I'm paying for the video to be made.........I'd rather the council just filled in the pot holes! :D

Getting a video edited to this quality, and it is a very good quality video, takes a lot a time and effort. As a council tax payer it is an inappropriate use of my taxes to produce this, edit it, get it approved through the various departments and to publish it. There are plenty of other ways to report potholes and I'm sure even the most mentally challenged can find the correct way without this waste of money effort!

So they paid £800 what about all the other costs involved not least the sycophant in front of the camera lip syncing who paid his wages while he wasn't doing the job we pay him for and all the other workers involved?

Also Ringway paying £800 is somewhat of a conflict considering the council award them contracts still at least this payment wasn't hidden in a brown envelope.

I just had a quick look at the Ringway website.

It seems that they work all over the place, not just in Worcestershire. They also have share-holders.

If they were trying to drum up extra business then the £800 was a pretty good investment for advertising. They can spend their profits on what they want.

A good point about the highways boss Jon Fraser. Mind you, if more people report potholes so they get filled in quicker then I think he's just doing his job.

Via the medium of singing, that is.

I just find this totally abhorrent. We have poorly managed roads in Worcestershire and all Mr Fraser and his colleagues can do is waste valuable time and resources in concocting a video to boost his ego. And if Ringway did pay for the video from their own 'private' funds, let us not forget the council staff time lost in making this video which is of a high quality, so god knows how many days or weeks they spent making it.

It seems we're paying council staff to do anything bar repair our roads properly. And in a time where so many people in the private sector are losing their jobs and struggling to make ends meet with low salaries, this video just sums up the insensitivity of council workers and the utter contempt they show to everyone else. It's like they're saying we've all got high paid jobs and we can waste time not working, so up yours everyone else.

But this is the highways department and I can't say I'm surprised by their actions. I really think heads should roll and Mr Fraser should be top of the list.

so some of you found this amusing . just think it could be you hitting a pot hole next you wont find it funny then , and think about the bikers . they do not need to be breaking the speed limit to hit one of the worst pot holes to come off their bikes and get hurt or killed may be then you can make another one and say HE DID IT OUR WAY ,ok you have had your laugh now get to work .

I am an old Biker and still don't hold some of the views on here.
As a PR exercise it is brilliant. The exposure in the paper and on UTube is amazing, and I agree with Maggie that if everyone who posts on here were to also report the pot holes then it would have an even better impact on our roads.
It seems quite acceptable that they can't repair the holes they don't know about, so that is where we can all help, and not only "get a life" but "save a life".

Okay we have potholes and many of us curse them whenever they appear and slow us up . My main gripe is that often they are not completed properly and appear again a few months later. However, I have to say what a ray of sunshine the video is to brighten up these miserably cold days, and thank goodness that the people in the highways department still have a sense of humour after all the grumbles. Well done !

I hit one of the potholes the council hadn't repaired on a road that is littered with them and I'm fighting with the council to be refunded.

The council claim that they regularly inspect and maintain the road. If you watch the video I made it's obvious that they don't.

Whilst I like their video (it's more fun than mine) it does rather rub salt in the wound - and not just for me .. there are several people who have all had their claims turned down by the council.

By all means watch their video - and report the potholes but from my experience even if you do report them the council will not take responsibility for damage done (whether the pothole was reported or not).

Hi Letterman,

I find your comment to be a little mean spirited.

If you could have been bothered to read the story, you would have known that the the video took half a day to create and another day to edit. The cost of this was around £800 which was funded by Ringway.

I don't know if you actually watched the video, but if you did, you may have noticed that everybody appearing in it was working. And lets be honest, when the big boss turns up on most sites, everybody tends to work that little bit harder.

Its funny, It gets the message across and somebody else paid for it.

What I don't get is why you are so insulting about it.

What irks me most? The maintenance at the garage. The way the tarmac is degraded in Worcester City. The quasi impossibility that is to drive without hitting at least some piece of broken asphalt or a potentially damaging hole.
The video wasn't cheap and road tax ain't.

Just watched it - brilliant! I am astounded at the amount of misery gut comments. I for one had never thought about the fact that these things need to be reported by the public (I guess I must have assumed that the Highways Dept are all knowing!) so the video has done it's job well as I am now about to report a nasty pothole that I drive over everyday. Does that mean you would prefer WCC to employ an army "road inspectors"?

They cover a huge geographical area and I don't believe that it is cost effective for them to inspect every road within the county......or even physically possible to do so with the staff they have.

What is wrong with the public contacting WCC to report a pothole?

Viral is the future. Someone is out of touch with reality but it's certainly not WCC. Ballsy and innovative springs to my mind when I read this article.

I see the usual council bashing, politically correct old duffers are in....

heres a thought:

The video cost £800 and encourages people to report potholes. If one person sees this who actually has a sense of humour remembers it, and reports a pothole thus potentially saving a motorcyclists life then it is £800 very well spent...

The target audience for this video is actually people driving on these roads, not people sat at home complaining about them....

At another time this video may very well had been appropriate, but when the Council is cutting its vital Services to the disabled, elderly and needy then it isn't.

Mr WXYZ, How would you feel if you had hit a pot hole that had been reported (but nothing done about it) and had your car damaged? It's very easy to sit on the internet and mock those who have suffered at the hands of council negligence - not so much fun when it happens to you and you find yourself out of pocket as many rate payers in Worcester have.

Those of us affected don't want compensation - we just want to have the money it has cost us refunded.

Personally I don't think the council should spend any more time away from their jobs to make any more funny videos until they have fixed all of the potholes that have been reported already, and then done sufficient inspections and maintenance to get our roads into good condition. At that point it might be appropriate to take some time out and enjoy making a fun video.

i'm not mocking those who have suffered at the hands of council negligence.
I am mocking those who want to moan about the video and potholes not being filled in, but don't actually want to be proactive and report them.
Myself am sceptical about the video, but as people have pointed out if it is making people aware to report the potholes then it is working.

and for your question - if i hit a pothole i knew had been reported i would probably curse myself for forgetting it was there
