Is this a painting of Lady Emily Foley?
3:00pm Monday 11th March 2013 in News By Robert Hale
PAINTING: Thought to be of Lady Emily Foley, but the owner would like confirmation of this.
A GAZETTE and Reporter reader is hoping people can help him identify the subject of an oil painting he bought recently.
Paul Butler, who bought it at an auction in Leominster, suspects the portrait is of Lady Emily Foley, of the well-known aristocratic local family.
He said: “I am convinced that the portrait is of Lady Emily Foley.
“This is based on the high quality of the picture and frame, the likely age of the portrait, as well as the appearance and clothing of the lady.
“But I do not have sufficient evidence to prove this."
He says that the woman in the painting resembles an etching in the National Portrait Gallery o fLady Emily Foley.
“It might be that one of your readers has an old photograph of Lady Emily Foley,” he said.
“Perhaps they have one of her wearing the same clothes as in the portrait.
“That would help to identify her.”
The Foley family is commemorated in the hotel of the same name in Malvern town centre.
