Superfast internet confusion

BT has reassured residents over concerns that superfast broadband was being delayed for another year in the town centre.

Eagle-eyed Gazette reader Paul Mason, from Queens Drive, was shocked when he logged onto the BT’s line checker website and saw that a target date for two cabinets in Abbey Road to “go live” with the fibre service had been put back to March 31, 2014.

The cabinets were expected to be upgraded in the coming weeks as part of BT’s already delayed superfast broadband rolloutin Malvern.

BT spokesman Emma Tennant confirmed work on the cabinets was progressing and that they should be up-and running within months.

She said: “The line checker is a guide and is updated regularly. However the work on some cabinets is more complicated than on others.

“Therefore, where a specific date is not yet known,a longer lead time may be given.”

Back on December 14th, the Gazette report said: "The work means 28 of Malvern’s 55 cabinets have now been upgraded to superfast broadband. BT has pledged to upgrade a further 20 either before the end of the year or in early 2013."

The latest report now states "they should be up-and running within months", which is vague to say the least and gives plenty of scope for further slippage.

The date for this has slipped a lot already - the local West Malvern cabinet upgrade to fibre was originally due to be completed by March 31st *2012* and here we are a year later basically still with no commitment to a date from BT, despite the much-trumpeted promise made back in December.....

For the future of the town centre this location, by the Post Office, is important. Delay here will contribute to the decay of the town centre as small businesses and offices relocate to more favorable locations and leave empty buildings. They, like households, can’t afford the private connections that the bigger businesses use. The area has many flats so it should not be short of customers.

Does BT prefer to see how many more businesses it can get to pay for higher cost services?

The reply “Therefore, where a specific date is not yet known,a longer lead time may be given.” says it all. I doubt that this means in a few months?
