Cher passes Cheryl in the Tweet elite

SHE may have been her mentor on the 2010 series of The X Factor but Cher Lloyd certainly seems to be a bigger star in the Twitterverse than Cheryl Cole.

Following her continued success over the pond Cher now boasts more than 3.58 million followers on the social networking site beating her former mentor by more than 30,000.

As recently reported in your Worcester News, America’s love affair with Cher, who is from Malvern, is showing no sign of fizzling out after her latest Stateside single proved a hit on the airwaves.

She recently unveiled the new music video for her single With Ur Love which has been re-released for a U.S. audience after reaching number four in the UK charts.

The song received airplay on more than 20 American radio stations after topping PopCrush’s About to Pop poll with almost 89 per cent of the votes.

The really odd thing is that Cher Lloyd has so many followers when her tweets are so obviously ghost written by a PR company. If I was interested in her, I'd certainly have given up after 'she' individually namechecked 22 different obscure US radio stations in one day.

I wonder if these figures actually represent real people or not. It's surprisingly easy to buy 'followers' if you want your account to look popular - former MP Louise Mensch was recently reported to have 40,000 fake followers.

Statuspeople,com has an online fake twitter follower checker, that detects followers that are not real people (not always paid for, there are some fake accounts that follow random people in order to send them spam). Here's what they say about these two:

@Cherlloyd has 40% fake followers
.
@CherylCole has 28% fake followers
.
...and for comparison:
.
@worcesternews has 4796 followers, of which 6% are fake
...and
@AndyPPUK (that's me) has 707 followers, of which 3% are fake.

Some residents of Malvern are interested in someone from here who is succeeding in their career and are glad to see positive news about the youth of today instead of the usual griping and complaining...
