THE controversial decision to introduce wheelie bins into Malvern is under attack from all sides ahead of a crunch meeting next week.

Malvern Hills District Council has spent up to £1.2million of a government grant purchasing wheelie bins and making adjustments to its fleet of lorries.

However the scheme is now coming under pressure and one member of the council has suggested the project could be aborted and the council forced to sell its new stock of plastic bins.

The switch to plastic bins seemed a done deal when the district council announced it would replace the existing cherry-coloured recycling sacks from May.

But Coun Anthony Warbur-ton, a member of the controlling Tory group, believes the project has been led by unelected officers.

Tomorrow, he will table a motion to full council demanding councillors are given the full facts and a chance to decide on the scheme for themselves.

Pressure is also coming from Malvern Town Council, which this week passed a motion urging the district council to hold off and give wheelie bins more discussion. Members are also requesting district council officers attend Malvern’s annual town meeting on March 19 to “explain in full their decision”.

Coun Clive Smith, who sits on both councils, backed the motion and said: “If we (the district council) decide not to go ahead with it then we would have to rip off our logos and sell the bins to some poor council foolish enough to go ahead with it.”

Meanwhile Malvern’s MP Harriett Baldwin has written to district council leader David Hughes on behalf of town councillor Mike Charles, who says he has been “inundated” with complaints from residents about wheelie bins.

Bring 'em on. Let's boost tourism by having races down Church Street; stuff an aged, must be at least 70 years old, pensioner in the bin and let it go. Wheelie, wheelie great fun ... TV coverage assured. YouTube fame as the geriatrics are catapulted into the air when the bin hits a kerb ... or should we go back to galvanised bins carried on the leather robed shoulders of bin men and women. 2013 V Fanny by Gaslight. Lets stuff council officers in them !! now I would pay good money to push our own dictator off the top of Old Wyche Rd in a wheelie bin !!!

This is a vocal minority. Many of us wel come the opportunity to conveniently recycle glass by putting it in the new bins. Roll them out! And whilst they're at it give us a black bin for the other rubbish.

I hate the bins are an eyesore everywhere but recycling is needed so i don't see much option but in areas where they are not suitable then an alternative has to be sort.

Must point out again that the recycling in the wheelie bins does not get recycled. Much of it is so badly contaminated it ends up in landfill. The glad is sent to roadfill so can never be recycled again but the resource is lost forever. The paper and plastics are left as low quality recycling and so are often rejected.
There is too be a judicial review at the end of the month to decide if this kind of recycling is even legal. So w could yet have to ditch the bins and have boxes instead.
If I am going to recycle I want my recycling to actually help, not just boost the councils recycling rates .
Lets not forget it is the residue that will have to pay in the end. Even the £1.6 million is our money already. I would rather it spent on helping people than on recycling a few glass jars.

Why is everyone so against these? They are no more an eyesore than bags of rubbish scattered all over our pavements. If anything they will be an improvement, much safer and less attractive to vermin. These also offer a much more efficient way of recycling, all recyclables together, which is the whole point after all.
