Charity in search for poppy organiser
9:00pm Thursday 31st January 2013 in News
A ROYAL British Legion branch is launching an appeal for a new organiser to take charge of its annual poppy collection.
The Powick and Callow End branch of the legion beat the threat of closure last year, after volunteers stepped forward to fill five principal officer roles.
Branch spokesman John Mason said: “We have survived the first part of our difficulties by keeping the branch going for the time being and we have had a couple of new members join us.
“Unfortunately we still have a major issue to resolve, the replacement of our poppy appeal organiser who is standing down after six years.”
He said Lyn Derrett, who has stepped down for personal reasons, had done a fantastic job in the post.
“This is perhaps the most important job in the branch, for without our poppy collections in the community, the RBL will as far as the public are concerned no longer exist in Powick and Callow End.
“We need someone who can spare a few hours in the late summer and autumn to organise the supply and distribution of poppies and their collecting cans to our dedicated team of collectors.
“This is not an arduous or taxing task, it just needs someone with their own transport and a storage area to hold the stock. They would need to be well-organised and can inspire and hold a team together.”
