Delays to trains after lorry hits bridge

Update 11.10am: FGW reporting that normal service has now resumed.

Update 10.15am: All lines have now reopened and train services are returning to normal, but some services may still be delayed or revised at short notice. Disruption is expected until 11am tomorrow.

A RAILWAY line was closed this morning after a lorry hit a bridge near Pershore.

A 40ft container lorry struck a bridge in Long Lane knocking out a chunk of concrete and slicing through a reinforcing bar.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Network Rail's mobile operations mananger on site reports that the damage is outside his scope for reopening the line.

"The line has been closed and we are mobilising a minor works team to attend as a precaution.

"On train service has been withdrawn to Worcester Shrub Hill station. There is currently no estimate for when the line will re-open."

Passengers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes on First Great Western services between Worcester Shrub Hill and London Paddington.

It is expected services will resume at 10.15am and tickets are being accepted on Virgin services until 11am.

A replacement bus service is running between Worcester Shrub Hill and Moreton-in-Marsh.
