PUPPY LOVE: Paula Purnell with golden retriever Saffie PUPPY LOVE: Paula Purnell with golden retriever Saffie

THIS cute canine was among hundreds hoping to become prize-winners at an annual dog show.

A total of 720 dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds travelled the length and breadth of the country to take part in the Worcester and Malvern Dog Show.

Hilary Norbury, secretary of the Worcester and Malvern Canine Society, said Saturday’s extravaganza, at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern had once again proved popular.

“It’s a very friendly affair,”

she said. “We don’t charge members of the public to come in – we like them to come and see all the breeds together.”

Paula Purnell had travelled from Cardiff with her golden retriever puppy, Saffie, aged 10.5 months.

She won first place in the puppy category for her breed, and came second in the junior category.

“She’s been in several shows but this is her first, so we’re pleased with that,” she said.

“To get ready she normally has a bath before most shows and it takes an hour to trim her.

“We’ve done the Worcester and Malvern show before. It’s worth coming for. She’ll get a treat later for coming first.”

Competitors came from far and wide including Essex, Derbyshire and south Wales despite overall numbers being slightly down on last year’s 800.

All entries had to be registered with The Kennel Club.
