Busy new year for 999 crews

THE new year began with a bang for emergency services as they dealt with an explosive cocktail of drinkfuelled fun, falls and fights.

The number of 999 calls on New Year’s Eve soared well above last year’s total as ambulance crews and hospital staff worked around the clock to pick up the pieces following a night of hard partying in Worcestershire and across the region.

At the peak of the celebrations ambulance crews in the West Midlands received five 999 calls a minute.

Their 1,000th call at 3.24am on Tuesday involved a patient being punched in the face for asking revellers to keep the noise down.

Earlier the previous evening another incident involved a drunken teenage girl tumbling down a riverbank. She was rescued, treated and taken to A&E.

Across the region there were 350 ambulances out on the road ready for the postmidnight 999 calls.
