National update: Motorists are being warned not to use flooded roads, and an AA spokesman said the service attended more than 320 breakdowns yesterday due to vehicles getting stuck in floodwater.
Nearly 400 flood alerts and warnings are currently in place, the agency said, including 91 more serious flood warnings, focused on the South West, East Anglia, the Midlands and the North East.
1:28pm
National roundup: Floods, signal failures and even animals on rail tracks combined to hold up millions of travellers today as the Christmas getaway began.
Flooding affected a number of rail services, which were also delayed when animals got on to the line near Micklefield in Yorkshire.
One of the worst of the delays was due to a signal problem at Hayes & Harlington in west London.
This caused long hold-ups to those travelling by rail to Heathrow on the west London airport's busiest day of the Christmas period.
Buses had to replace trains due to flooding on a number of lines, while on the London Underground the whole of the Jubilee Line was closed at the start of services due to a signalling system problem.

Met Office weather briefing: The Met Office and the Environment Agency are advising the public to stay aware of the latest forecasts and warnings, and be prepared for possible travel disruption and flooding as the rain falls onto already saturated ground.
Much of the UK will see persistent rain and strong winds today, with particularly heavy rain for parts of eastern Scotland where there could be as much as 80 mm.
Strong southeasterly winds may also bring the risk of coastal flooding here, with some snow falling over the higher mountains too.
