FLYING Object Crashes at Malvern was the headline in the Gazette 50 years ago.

"Residents of Link Top, Malvern, thought part of a rocket, or even an earth satellite, had crashed in Malvern on Saturday evening.

"Just after 6pm, a whining noise overhead was accompanied by something flashing across their vision to bury itself in the ground a short distance away "They found wireless and other equipment strewn around and, partly buried in the earth, a canister to which was attached a basket container.

"Officials were quickly on the scene to collect the pieces, which had become detached from its main equipment in the sky.

"Malvern police say they understood that cannister and basket were part of a balloon sent up by the RAF.

"Lieutenant-colonel W L Beck, of Link Tower Lodge, Albert Park Road, who notified the police, said: 'I did not see it come down. I understand it was part of a research rocket sent up by Bristol University'.

Mr George Watkins of 1 Alexandra Road, Malvern, was mowing his lawn at the time the object flashed overhead. He said: 'There was quite a thud as it his the ground'.
