A PLAY recently voted as the nation's favourite is set to come to The Norbury Theatre in Droitwich, this autumn.

Alan Bennett's “The History Boys” was premiered at the National Theatre in 2004 and it won numerous awards including the Evening Standard award for Best Play, the Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play and, on its transfer to Broadway, a Tony award for Best Play.

And now Norbury Players are preparing to bring the drama to a local audience.

A spokesman said: "Set in Sheffield in the 1980s, it is about an unruly bunch of bright, funny, sixth form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university.

"A maverick English teacher is at odds with a young and shrewd supply teacher. There's a headmaster obsessed with results, and a history teacher who thinks he is a fool.

"With its many references to art and poetry, it provokes questions about history and how you teach it, and about education and its purpose. Brilliantly funny but, by the end, there are tears with the laughter. It is a must-see play, and an experience you will remember."

The dates for the diary are September 7 to September 9 and September 14 to September 16.
