Malvern debut for actor's play

WHAT do actors do in between acting jobs, when they are resting''? That's the question asked in a new comedy which makes its debut in Malvern next month.

Resting is the first play by actor Nick Wilkes. A native of Tewkesbury, he trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has worked in theatres up and down the country.

However, when resting himself, Nick works backstage at Malvern Theatres, where his duties include the scenery and the lights, as well as running the cinema projector.

"Every actor has an in-between' job that they will go back to in between their acting work. I know actors that are office temps, van drivers, teachers, milkmen, sales assistants and yes, waiters," he said.

"I love Malvern Theatres, it's hard work, great fun, and the crew are the best in the world, but when working in the cinema? Well you can only watch a film so many times! So I used the time to write a play."

"It's about four out-of-work actors who trained together and who are currently resting' while employed in their in-between jobs. It's about jealously, hope, ambition, lust and just trying to make it through the day! Imagine Friends but with a Seinfeld slant!

"Yes, some of it is close to home. It's my first ever play, it's written in Malvern, set in Malvern and although the characters are not based on anyone specific, many of their traits are drawn directly from real life, often painfully and hilariously so."

"Anyone that's ever been on stage, worked in the theatre or knows what it's like to want something a little better from life, will love it!"

Resting is on at the Coach House Theatre, Grange Road, Malvern, Wednesday-Saturday, August 1-4, at 7.30pm. For tickets, call the Malvern Theatres box office on 01684 892277.
