WORCESTER'S Vamos theatre company plans to unmask the truth about the Swinging Sixties while wearing masks and without using words.

The full mask company will be on a local tour in the later winter and early spring with 'The Best Thing", a show about the sexual revolution and its consequences..

A spokesman said: "The Best Thing explores the moral clashes brought about by the 1960s sexual revolution; it is based on true experiences of women who had to give up their babies, and of those children who were given away, during a decade when being an unmarried mother was seen as morally suspect."

Vamos create all their shows from interviews, conversations, stories and research with real people.

Writer and director Rachael Savage said: "We were initially drawn to discovering more about children who had been separated from their parents. Along the way, the theme kept arising of children being taken away from young mothers who actually would have wanted to keep them.

"Some of the stories were truly heart-breaking and it seemed like a story that needed telling. Mask theatre is wordless – but it focuses not on what we say, but on our physical connections with each other: I felt it hugely important to show some of these processes in the show, and to propose that with empathy and sensitivity, we can connect better as humans, and even start the healing process.”

It’s 1966. The record player’s on, her hair’s bobbed and eye-lashes curled, for seventeen year old Susan, life is an adventure waiting to begin. But what happens next turns everything upside down, and its repercussions will last for decades to come.

The Best Thing will be performed at Malvern Theatres on Friday February 10 and Saturday February 11 with a post show discussion following the opening night's show.

Further visits to local venues will follow with The Best Thing appearing at Artrix Bromsgrove on Thursday March 2 and a relaxed performance at the venue on Wednesday April 5 which is open to all, but is specifically designed to welcome those who benefit, for whatever reason, from a more relaxed environment, such as people with sensory and communication disorders, a learning disability or autism spectrum condition.

Performances also follow at The Market Theatre Ledbury on Saturday March 18; the mac, Birmingham on Wednesday March 29 and The Courtyard, Hereford, on Friday April 7.

Tickets for shows are available from the venue's websites and a full list of tour dates are available from www.vamostheatre.co.uk.
