The Captain Phillips star is in talks to feature in the big-screen adaptation of David Eggers’ novel, reported Deadline.

The Spectacular Now’s James Ponsoldt will direct the movie from his own script, while Tom will also be attached as a producer alongside his Playtone partner Gary Goetzman.

The sci-fi novel, published in 2013, focuses on a young woman who is hired for a job in an internet monopoly called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

The book explores the dangers of life in a digital age where personal data is collected, sifted and sold, and used for surveillance, rendering privacy as obsolete.
