MALVERN Male Voice Choir's next concert, on Saturday, April 2, will feature the world premiere of a work by a local composer.
The work, I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes To The Hills, was written by local councillor and musician Tom Wells and is based on Psalm 121, sometimes called the Malvern Psalm.
The composition was presented to the choir’s musical director Charles Pavey, who will conduct the work.
He said: "It is quite an honour when a composer asks if you would like to premiere one of his works, and what particularly appealed to me even before I opened the score was that this was local music for a choir that likes to promote local music; really a perfect combination. Tom has dedicated this work to the people of Malvern."
As a musician, Tom Wells is well known in the area for teaching and conducting and is founder-conductor of Powick Community Choir.
This new piece will be sung by Malvern Male Voice Choir as part of its annual concert in support of Cancer Research UK. There will be other English and Welsh music, descriptive classical music, both serious and not quite so serious, a spiritual, a good quota from the 1960s and an even greater amount extracted from popular musicals.
The concert is at St. Edmund's Hall, College Road, at 7.30 pm, and the concert's principal sponsor is Westbridge Foods. Tickets are £8 (18 and under, £4) and can be obtained in advance from 01684 892772, or on the door. Wine and light refreshments are included in the price.
