Fire discovered by police patrol
TWO police community service offices on patrol raised the alarm after discovering a serious factory fire yesterday (May 8).
CSOs Kevin Youds and Lisa Hadley were on routine patrol in the Spring Lane area when they heard an alarm sounding at Auto Tyres and Batteries just after 7.30pm.
After alerting the fire brigade, Kevin and Lisa ensured vehicles and gathering onlookers were kept back from the factory and the debris that was beginning to fall from the building.
Sgt Sara Goodman said: "CSO Youds and CSO Hadley acted commendably until backup arrived shortly after they discovered the fire.
"An incident such as this reinforces the value of CSOs out on patrol. Without their quick actions there could have been far worse consequences due to the nature of the materials in the building."
Members of the Sea Cadets, who were meeting close by, were evacuated from their building but continued to provide refreshments to the emergency services from a safe location.
Sgt Goodman added: "We would like to thanks the Sea Cadets for provided much-needed refreshments throughout the evening, it was much appreciated by everyone."
Cordons were erected around the factory and road closures were put in place while fire crews extinguished the flames, but all routes are now open.
No one was injured during the incident.
Fire investigators are currently at the scene and the incident is still being treated as unexplained.
Anyone with information on the fire should call police on 08457 444888, quoting 717-s-080508, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
