CHRISTMAS festivities got off to a good start with the Christmas concert at Powick Parish Hall on the Saturday before Christmas. The standard of music was high and included singing by the audience. The musical director was Stephen Watkins and the conductor Tom Wells and the evening was compered by Tony Seldon. The concert started with a duet by the Sandy sisters (Nicola and Louisa) singing Where is Christmas? The choir of local people sang The Callow Carol (music by Tom Wells), The Holly and the Ivy, a setting of Sibelius' Finlandia entitled Be Still my Soul (soloist Nicola Sandy) and The Cowboy Carol (complete with ranch fencing and cowboy hats!) Tom Wells had composed a new carol Faith, Hope, Love which was sung by a small choir and the whole choir sang John Rutters' Look at the World. Musical numbers included a piano solo by Mathew Gordon Au Claire de la Lune and Christmas Elves played on piano by Sam Griffiths, while Derek Stokes sang a solo. There were humorous sketches read by Margaret Allen on The Christmas Ostrich, Joy Hadley on The Nativity School Play and Kris Quatermass on Christmas Lunch. Robert Floyd read A Politically Correct Christmas, Jenny Taylor appeared as Little Sod complete with baby-grow and high chair, describing baby's first Christmas assisted by Stephen and Pammy Watkins as parents. Mary Ward and Cheryl Lester performed a dance Christmas Hey in costume. The second-half began with a medley of carols played on handbells by Powick Handbell Ringers directed by Mary Stafford. During the interval hot punch and mince pies were served by Gladys Floyd and Julia Sandys and team. A raffle was held which included bottles of wine and chocolates and raised £122.50 for the Malvern Hills Foyer (former MHHYAT) in Malvern Link. Special thanks were expressed to Jenny Taylor who co-ordinated the event. A similar concert was held in Callow End on the Friday. read more
