THE life of Upton Rugby Club veteran Nigel Banwell will be commemorated at a memorial service in Great Malvern next month.

The service is at the Holly Mount United Reformed Church, Queens Drive, on Friday, February 10, at 1pm.

Mr Banwell, aged 68, collapsed on Saturday, January 7, while he was putting out the flags at his club's ground before a local derby against Evesham.

Mr Banwell was one of the founder members of the Upton club and was also president of the North Midlands league.

There will be a private cremation before the memorial service.

Mourners are warned that parking in the immediate area of the church is very limited, and it is suggested that those attending use the car parks in the town centre.

Mr Banwell leaves a widow, Jane, a son Oliver, who coaches Upton, and daughter Ruth, who lives in Australia.

Mr Banwell's death came just a fortnight after the death of 22-year-old Nathan Tomkins, one of Upton RFC's best and most popular players.
