SOLDIERS from Malvern who died in the Battle of the Somme will be remembered at a concert in the town.

Chamber choir Severn Voices will be performing at Christ Church, Avenue Road, on Saturday, November 12, at 7.30pm.

The concert features a work specially composed for the centenary by Oscar-winning composer David Lang.

"Memorial Ground is composed to be unique for each performance," said William Coleman of the choir.

"'We are remembering three soldiers from Malvern killed during the Somme, named on the Christ Church war memorial, with words about their life and families."

Edward Wilkinson died on July 7, Victor Thompson on July 23 and William Butt on September 3.

"The Somme offensive began with devastating losses on July 1, 1916. On the first day alone Malvern College lost 10 former pupils, and we remember these Old Malvernians too," said Mr Coleman.

"We always like to include works by local composers in our concerts, and we are very fortunate to be including choral songs by Ledbury composer, John Frith. His composition The Young Man in April is a musical setting of words by war poet Rupert Brooke."

Tickets are £7.50 (accompanied children free) from Malvern TIC or at the door.
