PEOPLE have been warned to stay safe during Bonfire Night celebrations.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) has stressed that safety procedures should be followed particularly as fireworks can be dangerous if misused.

Station Commander Stuart Crebbin from HWFRS said: “We are encouraging people to go along to an organised event with their families and friends as this is by far the safest option.

"A list of organised events can be found on our service website.

"We do however, recognise that many people will be holding their own bonfire parties and get-togethers, and we want to remind them of some simple firework and bonfire safety tips to help avoid injury or any damage to their property."

The service's tips include only buying fireworks marked with British Standard Kitemark BS 7114 from a reputable supplier, keeping them in a closed metal box and taking them out one at a time.

People are also advised to follow the instructions, light fireworks at arm's length with a taper and stay well back.

Naked flames, including cigarettes, should be kept away from fireworks.

People are advised not to drink alcohol if setting off fireworks, never to go back to them once they are lit and not to put them in a pocket or throw them.

Children should be supervised and children under five should not be given sparklers.

Sparklers remain hot even after they have gone out so should be put in a bucket of water after use.

Pets should be kept indoors with the curtains closed.

Anyone thinking of holding a display at home is asked to respect their neighbours and not let them off too late at night.
