SCHOOLCHILDREN in Worcestershire have dressed as Roald Dahl's characters to mark what would have been his 100th birthday.

Some of Roald Dahl's most popular characters, including Willy Wonka, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Trunchbull, Matilda and even an Oompa Loompa or two, popped up around the county as part of the celebrations.

September 13 was Roald Dahl's birthday and is now known as Roald Dahl day but, this year, events have been taking place all year to celebrate 100 years since he was born.

At St Clement's Primary School in Worcester, staff and children dressed up to kick start a topic based around Dahl and some of his best-loved stories.

Tina Brown, the school's English subject lead, said: "Reading for pleasure is a crucial factor in determining children's future success and today's celebration is just one of the ways we at St Clement's are trying to raise the profile of reading and reading for sheer enjoyment."

At Malvern St James, pupils also took part in a Dahlicious dress up day.

As well as a variety of Dahl-inspired activities, the girls enjoyed a lunch which included Boggi’s Chicken, Fresh Mudburgers, Wormy Spaghetti, Snozzcumbers and Bruce Bogtrotter’s cake.

Roald Dahl died in 1990 but his legacy as the world's number one storyteller lives on with classics such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny Champion of the World, Matilda, the BFG and George's Marvellous Medicine remaining firm favourites.
