A DRAMATIC crash left a vehicle on top of a vintage car, trapping the driver and passenger inside.

The man and woman, both believed to be aged in their sixties, were rescued by firefighters using heavy cutting equipment before being taken to hospital.

Medical staff stated the two individuals were “fortunate to escape serious injury” following the collision on the A449 in Much Marcle, near Ledbury, at 11.25am yesterday.

The male driver of the classic car hurt his hand while the female passenger was treated for leg, back and neck pain.

An ambulance, paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance attended the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Crews responded to a road traffic collision following reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a vintage car.

“One vehicle was found on top of the vintage car, trapping the driver and passenger.

“Both the driver and passenger were fortunate to escape serious injury. The driver, a man believed to be in his sixties, was treated for a hand injury.

“A woman passenger, also believed to be in her sixties, was treated for leg, back and neck pain.

“Both patients were taken to Hereford County Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Two Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews from Ledbury and Fownhope attended the crash, working to stabilise the vehicles and make the road safe.

Officers from West Mercia Police’s Operational Patrol Unit Herefordshire were also present.

The unusual incident inspired reaction on social media sites.

Dave Throup, of the Environment Agency, Tweeted a picture of the crash, stating “bet this took some explaining” while Jim Hancox, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, posted “breaks your heart to see a beautiful car like this damaged – main thing however is that the occupants were fine”.
