TRADERS in Barnards Green have created a unique memorial to the man of the area who gave their lives during the First World War.

They have made a commemorative art work which is currently being displayed in the window of an empty unit in the Green, which marks the 43 men from the local area who were killed during the conflict.

The artwork includes a handmade poppy for each of the men, giving further details about them, including where they lived in the Green.

The art work was installed in the window of 104 Barnards Green Road - the former Sherriff's fishmonger - this week and will remain there until Thursday, November 13.

Jane Knowles of the traders' association said: "It will be eye catching and will bring the message home of how each small community was fundamentally affected by the war.

"Faith Renger from Malvern Museum did the research and we owe her a tremendous amount for all her hard work."

The names of the 43 men have also been reproduced on a commemorative poster which is being displayed by shops and businesses in the Green. The poster incorporate a contemporary photograph of men of the Worcestershire Regiment taken on the Barnards Green island.
