VISITORS were given a warm welcome to Worcester fire station as it swung open its doors for one day only.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service's Copenhagen Street site was the scene of a number of fascinating demonstrations by a number of the emergency and rescue services from 10.30am to 4pm on Saturday.

All age groups were given the chance to explore the working station and the features of the fire engines as well as learning more about road safety and what to do if your house is filled with smoke.

Station Commander Toby Kempton said: “The open day gives us an opportunity to be able to invite the public into the fire station to see up close and at first hand what a fire station is like and the environment we work in.

"This is our last year at this fire station, so it was quite important for me being a bit of a traditionalist to invite people into the building for the last time."

Mr Kempton added although the day was delivered in a fun atmosphere, they do share important and serious information on how to stay safe, with this year's event having a new and young drivers theme.

"It is meant to be good for the children and the families but we do get our messages across."

A number of other agencies were on hand to support the service's event, including the Fire Fighters Charity, West Mercia Police, Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) as well as Blood Donors.

Some of the events and attractions on offer included a static water rescue display, road traffic collision demonstrations aimed at new and young drivers, equipment and squad drill demonstrations and community advice.

The event, now in its seventh year, is was supported by Worcester BID (Business Improvement District) as part of their eighth annual Motor Festival in the streets of the city centre on the same day.

Firefighters were even on hand to man the barbecue to ensure the crowds at the busy and popular day were fed and watered safely.
